In the market for an antique motorcycle? There are several ways for you to find the bike of your dreams. Many online websites offer antique motorcycles for sale, either through a dealership or by owner. You can also visit local speciality shops that sell primarily pre-owned antique motorcycles. There are five basic steps we recommend when it comes to looking at antique motorcycles for sale, and when deciding to make a purchase. Its not always easy when trying to turn your dream of owning an antique motorcycle into a reality, but with a little research and dedication you can.
- What do you want – bear in mind that there are many different types of bikes available. When looking at antique motorcycles for sale, be sure to narrow your search to a particular type or brand/model. Consider the amount of riding you will do, and where most of your riding will be done.
- Do your research – antique motorcycles often times require maintenance to keep them running. Sometimes, these bikes need quite frequent work, and the parts can be hard to find (and costly). Study reviews by other owners and understand what repairs will be required.
- Be smart buyer – when looking at antique motorcycles for sale, remember that you are the customer. Dont fall into the thought that the bike is overly rare and will sale at any time. Have patience, negotiate and push to get the best price possible on the antique motorcycle of your dreams.
- Test drive, test drive, test drive – dont just buy a bike on looks. Many antique motorcycles for sale require maintenance before they will run. Some have been sitting in a garage or warehouse, unridden for many years. Take the antique bike out for a decent spin and make sure it operates as it should.
- Understand the law – your antique bike will require registration and insurance like any other. Before you buy an antique motorcycle for sale, make sure to understand all taxes, fees, and costs in making it leggal.

Similar to seeking coverage for antique automobiles, getting antique motorcycle insurance requires a bit of research. There are motorcycle insurance companies that offer specialized insurance plans specifically for covering antique motorcycles. Most owners of vintage or antique motorcycles put very few miles on the bike per year. Motorcycle insurance companies take this into account when covering an antique motorcycle compared to a more modern bike. The logic here is that less miles equals less likelihood of an accident, and thereby less likelihood of a claim being made. When looking for antique motorcycle insurance plans, be sure to look into the mileage limits that may exist on your policy. If you policy has a mileage limit on it and in the scenario that you exceed that limit in a designated time period, your bike will not be covered for claims.
There are several factors that influence the savings you will likely receive on antique motorcycle insurance versus standard motorcycle insurance coverage. Besides the reduced mileage you will put on the bike, most owners elect not to include collision coverage in their policy. Unless your bike is extremely valuable, there is no reason to include the extra cost to your policy. Electing only for the minimum state requirements will save you money while keeping you safe from tickets.
Antique motorcycle insurance also takes into account that riders of antique motorcycles are far less likely to get into an accident that more modern bikes. This is often due to the reduced speeds at which antique bikes travel, due in part to their often times smaller engines and less aggressive gearing.
